Hartsfield-Jackson’s world-class accomplishments, along with its future endeavors, will take center stage at the inaugural “State of the Airport” address Thursday in downtown Atlanta.

The first-ever event will feature presentations by Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed and Aviation General Manager Miguel Southwell. The two leaders will review ATL’s impressive 2015 milestones while outlining the Airport’s roadmap for growth before an expected audience of 800 company executives, elected officials and international leaders.

“Recognizing that the Airport is one of the most important transportation hubs in the world, it is time to formally celebrate our successes and look toward the future,” Southwell said.

The luncheon, hosted by the Metro Atlanta Chamber and the World Trade Center Atlanta, will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Georgia World Congress Center.

Richard Quest, CNN anchor and aviation correspondent, will emcee the event. Other speakers include Craig Lesser, chairman of the World Trade Center Atlanta; Hala Moddelmog, president and CEO of the Metro Atlanta Chamber; and Ed Bastian, president and incoming CEO of Delta Air Lines.

As part of the event, one company and one individual will be presented with the Global Corporate Leader Award and the Global Leader Award, respectively. These awards honor those whose actions have advanced Atlanta’s or the state’s prominence in international air transportation. Six finalists – three for each award – have been selected.

Also among the highlights will be a special preview of the domestic terminal’s modernization. The modernization is part of ATLNext, a series of forward-thinking capital improvement projects over the next 20 years. For the first time, the public will see renderings of substantial improvements planned for the terminal, new gates and new parking structures.

Reed and Southwell also will discuss the construction of a new concourse, outline plans for a sixth runway and review the expansion of ATL’s cargo area. Investment in ATL is expected to top $6 billion, with nearly $1 billion to be spent in 2017 alone.
